[Summer Program] International Summer School in Human Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland: 22 May - 9 June 2023

The University of Jyväskylä is pleased to welcome you to our 19th International Summer School in Human Sciences in May-June 2023. The Summer School in Human Sciences comprises of 14 interdisciplinary courses for undergraduate and/or graduate students interested in e.g. language and culture studies, communication, education, music, sport and health sciences, business and marketing and social sciences.

The summer school of 2023 will be held as a physical event on campus. The University of Jyväskylä constantly monitors the Covid-19 pandemic situation and is prepared to make changes and adjustments to the programme if necessary. Costs

SMU students pay SMU tuition at SMU for the transfer credit hours. Students are expected to pay for their travel to and from Jyväskylä as well as living expenses and accommodation while in Jyväskylä. Small participation fees may be collected for individual events of the social programme.

Teaching staff

The teaching staff of the Summer School consists of professors, researchers and experts from the University of Jyväskylä and from partner universities.

 

Arrival service and student tutors
Summer School participants arriving from abroad are assisted by student tutors (fellow students of the University of Jyväskylä). The student tutors will help international Summer School participants with practical matters and finding their way around Jyväskylä.

 

Free time programme
The summer school offers an extensive free time programme, which allows participants to get to know Jyväskylä and the Finnish summer, as well as their fellow students. The programme includes various activities such as cultural evenings, get-togethers, excursions, Finnish sauna evenings, picnics etc. The social programme is mainly free of charge.

 

Accommodation

The summer school has reserved a tentative quota of rooms for summer school students. Detailed information about accommodation during the summer school, reservation and payment instructions will be sent to students who have been granted admission to the Summer School. NALCAP: North American Language and Culture Assistant Program in Spain

The North American Language and Culture Assistants Program (NALCAP) is an educational outreach initiative of the Education Office of the Embassy of Spain sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Spain. NALCAP falls under the category of public diplomacy programs. As a language assistant, award recipients fulfill the role of a cultural ambassador through the promotion of English and French language learning and mutual understanding via cultural exchange. As such, their role is to encourage students of all ages in Spain to broaden their knowledge of the language and culture of the Canada. 

 

Positions are offered in schools all across Spain, running from October 1st to May 31st for most assignments. NALCAP recipients receive a monthly stipend to help cover living expenses of about 800 to 1000 euros and medical insurance from either the national government of Spain or the regional governments of Spain, depending on the placements awarded. Hours of the assistantship range from 12 to 16 hours per week. 

 

This is a remarkable international cooperation program in which over 3,000 Canadians have participated since its introduction in 2005 taking with them an experience of a lifetime. The possibilities for both professional and personal growth are endless.

Costs

[Summer Program] LUT Summer School at LUT University, Finland

 ARE YOUR LOOKING FOR A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE NEXT SUMMER?

 

What about travelling to Finland for LUT Summer School and gaining a deep understanding of contemporary, relevant topics in the field of Climate Change, Sustainability, Creativity, Combination of Business and Technology, all the while experiencing the beauty of Finland in the summer?

 

LUT University is a Saint Mary’s partner institution in Lappeenranta, Finland. Saint Mary’s students are invited to take part in their LUT Summer School taking place from June 26-July 15 2023 (3 weeks). Credits from the program are transferrable to the extent that they fulfill the student’s degree requirements and need to be approved by the student’s academic advisor via a Letter of Permission before the program commences. Tuition is paid at SMU for the transfer credit hours (although the flyer states otherwise).

 

Bachelor and Master students in the fields of technology and business are invited to apply, but LUT Summer School offers mainly Master’s level courses. University of Ulsan is Saint Mary’s partner institution in Ulsan, Korea. Saint Mary’s students are invited to take part in their Ulsan International Program taking place from June 30-July 27, 2023 (4 weeks). Credits from the program are transferrable to the extent that they fulfill the student’s degree requirements and need to be approved by the student’s academic advisor via a Letter of Permission request before the program commences. Tuition is paid at SMU for the transfer credit hours.

 

Interested students should submit the SMU Exchange Program application by February 15. Two (2) Saint Mary’s students will be accepted into the program.

2023 Japanese Studies Students MEXT Scholarship

This Japanese Government scholarship is intended for students who are currently undergraduates at a foreign (non-Japanese) university majoring in a Japanese language and/or culture-related field.

The deadline for submitting applications is 5:00 p.m. EST, Tuesday, February 7, 2023.

[Summer Program] Seoul Summer School at University of Soul, Korea

University of Seoul is Saint Mary’s partner institution in Seoul, Korea. Saint Mary’s students are invited to take part in their International Summer School taking place from June 18 – July 18 2023. Credits from the program are transferrable to the extent that they fulfill the student’s degree requirements, on a Letter of Permission approved by your academic program. Tuition is paid at SMU for the transfer credit hours. University of Seoul will subsidize the cost of some of the field trips during the program. On-campus housing will be offered on a first come first serve basis, and students will be responsible for housing fees.

Scholarships for Canadian academics, students and professionals: Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program, 2023-2024

Global Affairs Canada and the Chinese Ministry of Education are offering short-term scholarships to Canadians wishing to study abroad in China. Scholarships are awarded for studies, research, language studies or a combination of studies and language studies at participating Chinese institutions.

 

  • Program name: Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program

  • Funding organizations: Global Affairs Canada and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China

  • Target audiences: Canadian students (college, undergraduate and graduate levels in Canada); Canadian faculty members and research staff at a post-secondary institution in Canada; Canadian mid-career professionals

  • Duration: 4 to 12 months for students; and 8 weeks to 12 months for faculty members and mid-career professionals

Call for Globalink Mentors

Kansai Gaidai University Asian Studies Program Japanese Language Courses

Kansai Gaidai University is offering an online program in which SMU students can take up to two courses in winter 2023 (Jan 25-May 26 2023). Tuition is paid at the host university. Students may receive academic credits towards their SMU degree, provided that those transfer credits can be approved beforehand via the Letter of Permission Request Form submitted to the SMU Records Office.

THE 2023 JAPANESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP RECOMMENDED BY RIKKYO UNIVERSITY

Rikkyo University, SMU’s partner institution in Japan, is accepting applications from SMU graduate students for the MEXT Scholarship to study at Rikkyo University.

 

MEXT is funded by the Japanese government and covers economy airfare, tuition and monthly stipends of 143,000yen (approx. CAD$1400) for the 2023-24 academic year.

 

Applicants should be proficient in the language used in their study or research at Rikkyo University. Their graduate programs in Japanese are found at https://english.rikkyo.ac.jp/academics/#Graduate, and those in English are found at https://english.rikkyo.ac.jp/academics/english.html#Graduate.

Please note: Canadian citizens are not eligible; however, students of eligible countries attending Saint Mary’s are eligible to apply. Selected scholarship recipients will start their study at Rikkyo University as an exchange student from the 2023 Fall semester. They are then expected to apply for extension of the MEXT scholarship and successfully take and pass the entrance exam of one of Rikkyo University’s Graduate Schools, to proceed as a regular degree-seeking student from April 2025 at the latest.

Shastri Student Internship in India Project (SSII) (Application deadline extended)

Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) is pleased to announce a Call for Applications for Shastri Student Internship in India (SSII) Project. The SSII Project is part of SICI Canada's Short-term Outbound Mobility Program, Canadian Scholars to India (CSI). The CSI Program is supported by Global Affairs Canada, the Government of Canada. The target of the CSI Program is to improve and diversify Canadian scholars (student and faculty) academic mobility to India.

 

The SSII project-grants offer Internship and Co-op opportunities (International Work Integrated Learning) to Canadian undergraduate-level students in India. The SSII grant recipients are Canadian undergrad students going to India for three months to work on specific projects in their host Indian organizations. During these three months, the SSII students will be working under the supervision of designated supervisors/coordinators at their respective host Indian organizations.  

 

The application deadline has been extended to 22 December 2022.

The photos could be taken by you, or you could be the subject of the picture while you were overseas in global learning activities from SMU. You can submit up to 6 photos in total.

Prize: Your photo will be featured in the 2023 Study Abroad Photo Calendar, and you will also receive a free copy.

International Helsinki Days (IHD)

International Helsinki Days (IHD) is a seminar week organized for the 36th time 5.2- 12.2.2023 by the Student Union of Hanken School of Economics. Every year approximately 40 students from all around the world take part in the IHD seminar. The whole week is filled with interesting lectures, company visits and a look into the Finnish student life. At the same time, we create new friendships and become one big family!

2023 Oxfam Canada x Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity Youth Summit

Applications are now open to join the 2023 Oxfam Canada x Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity Youth Summit – a multi-day in-person interactive and intensive training for activists, community leaders and passionate individuals from across Canada packed full of workshops, inspiring speakers, and breakout sessions. The event will take place February 24-26 2023 in Ottawa, with all expenses paid for travel and accommodation. The Youth Summit will focus on building skills and knowledge on sexual and reproductive health and rights and comprehensive sexuality education, including how to advocate to politicians, anti-racist and decolonial approaches to this work, art for activism, and international perspectives on these topics. Application deadline is November 28, 2022.
