Apply for Study Abroad

Follow the steps below to submit an application to the Study Abroad Program. Be sure to give yourself several weeks to complete the application, note that it includes a meeting with your academic advisor and two reference letter. Learn more below.

Before you apply:

  • Carefully read and learn about how Study Abroad works at Saint Mary’s University on our website.

  • Research countries and schools of interest using our Partner School List and Map.

  • Meet with your Academic Advisor to confirm you have space in your degree to transfer credits from your exchange.

  • Read the Student Exchange Agreement (to be formally signed after acceptance to a program).

  • Meet with the Study Abroad Advisors if needed, to address your questions or concerns.




The Application:

A completed application for a Study Abroad Program includes:

  • Study Abroad Application Form and Checklist

  • Letter of Intent (see toolkit for details)

  • Unofficial Academic Transcript (saved from Self Service Banner) and unofficial transcripts from any other universities where you have taken courses.

  • Resume (Be sure to include information on awards, past international experience, extra- curricular/volunteer activities, personal interest, etc.)

  • Two Reference Letters (At least one must be academic, the other may be personal or academic).




Application Deadlines:

December 15 Full year, Fall-semester exchange, and Winter-semester exchange for the Killam
Fellowship in the United States
(Canadian citizens only)

January 12 A full-year abroad in Japan

February 10 A Full-year exchange, Fall-semester exchange, and Winter-semester exchange in all other
programs not mentioned above

February 1-15 Summer abroad program (unless noted otherwise)
