Crowdmark East Coast Users Event
1:00pm – 4:00pm | May 4, 2023

Hybrid (in-person and online) | Atrium 216, Saint Mary’s University

Last year faculty users at Saint Mary’s University met as a group along with Crowdmark representatives. During the session faculty users shared wisdom, insight and their experiences of using Crowdmark for their course assessments. This year, we are expanding this event to invite participation from faculty and staff from across the region. Crowdmark users on the east coast include Dalhousie University, University of New Brunswick, St. Francis Xavier University, and Cape Breton University. Our distinguished speaker lineup includes:

  • Dr. Roby Austin, Saint Mary’s University, Astronomy & Physics & Associate Dean of Science: Curriculum & Programs

  • Dr. Sarah Chisholm, Dalhousie University, Mathematics & Statistics & Learning Centre Coordinator

  • Dr. Corey DeGagne, Dalhousie University, Computer Science

  • Dr. Adele Fraser, Saint Mary’s University, Mathematics and Computing Science

  • Dr. John Irving, Saint Mary’s University, Mathematics & Computing Science, Chairperson

  • Katelyn MacNeil, St. Francis Xavier University, Biology

  • Dr. Laura Stiles-Clarke, Saint Mary’s University, Astronomy and Physics

Broadening the group in this way, presents further opportunity for faculty on the East Coast to share their strategies and challenges in deploying assessments. In bringing together users across different departments and disciplines we anticipate attendees will be exposed to new ideas and approaches on managing grading and assessment workflows.

Some themes will be explored include:

  • Optimising grading workflows –– approaches which enable the efficient provision of assessment, grading and feedback which also save faculty time.

  • Building comment banks and developing processes which help faculty provide targeted and timely feedback to students.

  • Supporting innovations, evolving how assessment is developed, assigned and administered to promote or respond to changes within higher education.

The program will be offered in a hybrid format, with in-person and remote attendance options. The event will be offered in three plenary sessions. Attendees are welcome to attend any session based on their availability and interest.

About Crowdmark

Crowdmark is a digital platform which supports delivering assignments, tests and exams, grading these assessments and sharing feedback to students. This solution provides a patented paper-based grading system for in-class assignments, tests and exams, which are scanned and graded online. Remote and online assessments can be assigned as synchronous (same duration and time) OR asynchronous (same duration within a time window). Crowdmark streamlines grading of short and long answers with a full suite of grading tools while automatically grading multiple choice questions. Student work is returned electronically to their Crowdmark portfolio along with unparalleled insights into performance.

Crowdmark is intentionally designed to enhance and support teaching and learning. The grading and assessment solution. The platform leverages artificial intelligence to automate administrative tasks. Meaning educators can grade paper-based and digital exams and assignments up to 3× faster than traditional workflows, freeing up time for educators to leave rich, personalized feedback for every student.

Crowdmark at Saint Mary’s University

Originally introduced at Saint Mary’s University to support remote coursework in the Mathematics department, use of Crowdmark has continued and is being used in courses in other programs and for in-person classes.

Faculty using Crowdmark identify a number of key advantages:

  • With larger classes, it’s easier to manage a grading team via the platform (for both in-person and remote assessments).

  • Grading in Crowdmark is organized by question. Q1, Q2, Q3, and so forth. Therefore, graders can be assigned specific questions to grade without the need for shuffling or exchanging papers.

  • Faculty have a higher degree of oversight and can keep an eye on consistency of feedback.

  • Your team can be in multiple locations yet still work effectively on the grading process. They can refer to the original paper, and feedback, should issues or concerns arise.

  • Values can be associated with specific comments in your comment library, which means you can apply a comment and grade with a single keystroke.

  • Supports automatic grading of multiple-choice questions on in-person (on paper) and remote exams.

Faculty indicate a far more streamlined and optimized process is possible using the platform.
