French + Sciences Programs

Developed by Campus France in partnership with French as a Foreign Language (FLE) Centres, French + Sciences is a program of short language and scientific stays in cutting-edge technological sectors. French + Sciences has been designed for English-speaking international students enrolled in a science and technology university who may be completely new to French. The scientific content is 100% taught in English.

Funding for short-term exchange competitions (Inbound to SMU)

Global Affairs Canada has announced various short-term exchange scholarships in Canada for international students, faculty and professionals in 2023-24.

 

SMU faculty who would like to invite graduate students to undertake research (not coursework) (see 1) and 2) below) or invite faculty or administrators to undertake research or professional development (see 3) below) to SMU in the 2023-24 academic year should email global@smu.ca by Feb 28, 2023 to inquire. All scholarship applications can only be completed through the Global Learning Office’s institutional account. A signed MoU with the invitee’s home institution is not required.

 

1) Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) – Opportunity to invite graduate students for research

To be eligible, the graduate student being invited must be enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country/territory and be a citizen of an eligible country/territory (see list):

  • Europe: Türkiye, Ukraine

3) Canada-CARICOM Faculty Leadership Program -- Opportunity to invite faculty and staff from CARICOM Countries for research/professional development

The Canada-CARICOM Faculty Leadership Program provides professional development opportunities for faculty wishing to upgrade their knowledge and skills in Canada, and for international managers/administrators who are responsible for promoting student mobility between their home country/territory and Canada.

 

To be eligible, the faculty or staff being invited must be employed full-time at a post-secondary institution in the eligible CARICOM member and associate member states and be a citizen of such (see list):

“See Different” -- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program for Youth

The program is offered free of charge for youth between the ages of 15-24 and includes a beginner level certificate called ‘Principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’ and a more advanced level certificate called ‘Emerging Leaders of DEI’.

Participants are invited to join their ‘National Youth Ambassador Network for Emerging Leaders of DEI’.

[Summer Program] Summer School on Sustainability and Behavioral Economics at University of Kassel, Germany: July 31-August 27 2023

University of Kassel is inviting Saint Mary’s students to participate in their summer school on Sustainability and Behavioral Economics.  The program is offered by Uni Kassel’s Faculty of Economics and Management, and is most suited to students who will have completed two years of undergraduate studies studying Economics, Management, and other related disciplines. Please note that SMU students pay SMU tuition at SMU for the transfer credit hours, thus no additional tuition will be assessed by the host university.

[Summer Program] International Summer School in Human Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland: 22 May - 9 June 2023

Teaching staff

The teaching staff of the Summer School consists of professors, researchers and experts from the University of Jyväskylä and from partner universities.

 

Arrival service and student tutors
Summer School participants arriving from abroad are assisted by student tutors (fellow students of the University of Jyväskylä). The student tutors will help international Summer School participants with practical matters and finding their way around Jyväskylä.

 

Free time programme
The summer school offers an extensive free time programme, which allows participants to get to know Jyväskylä and the Finnish summer, as well as their fellow students. The programme includes various activities such as cultural evenings, get-togethers, excursions, Finnish sauna evenings, picnics etc. The social programme is mainly free of charge.

 

Accommodation

The summer school has reserved a tentative quota of rooms for summer school students. Detailed information about accommodation during the summer school, reservation and payment instructions will be sent to students who have been granted admission to the Summer School. NALCAP: North American Language and Culture Assistant Program in Spain

The North American Language and Culture Assistants Program (NALCAP) is an educational outreach initiative of the Education Office of the Embassy of Spain sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Spain. NALCAP falls under the category of public diplomacy programs. As a language assistant, award recipients fulfill the role of a cultural ambassador through the promotion of English and French language learning and mutual understanding via cultural exchange. As such, their role is to encourage students of all ages in Spain to broaden their knowledge of the language and culture of the Canada. 

 

Positions are offered in schools all across Spain, running from October 1st to May 31st for most assignments. NALCAP recipients receive a monthly stipend to help cover living expenses of about 800 to 1000 euros and medical insurance from either the national government of Spain or the regional governments of Spain, depending on the placements awarded. Hours of the assistantship range from 12 to 16 hours per week. 

 

This is a remarkable international cooperation program in which over 3,000 Canadians have participated since its introduction in 2005 taking with them an experience of a lifetime. The possibilities for both professional and personal growth are endless.

[Summer Program] LUT Summer School at LUT University, Finland

LUT University is a Saint Mary’s partner institution in Lappeenranta, Finland. Saint Mary’s students are invited to take part in their LUT Summer School taking place from June 26-July 15 2023 (3 weeks). Credits from the program are transferrable to the extent that they fulfill the student’s degree requirements and need to be approved by the student’s academic advisor via a Letter of Permission before the program commences. Tuition is paid at SMU for the transfer credit hours (although the flyer states otherwise).

 

Bachelor and Master students in the fields of technology and business are invited to apply, but LUT Summer School offers mainly Master’s level courses. 2023 Japanese Studies Students MEXT Scholarship

This Japanese Government scholarship is intended for students who are currently undergraduates at a foreign (non-Japanese) university majoring in a Japanese language and/or culture-related field.

[Summer Program] Seoul Summer School at University of Soul, Korea

University of Seoul is Saint Mary’s partner institution in Seoul, Korea. Saint Mary’s students are invited to take part in their International Summer School taking place from June 18 – July 18 2023. Credits from the program are transferrable to the extent that they fulfill the student’s degree requirements, on a Letter of Permission approved by your academic program. Tuition is paid at SMU for the transfer credit hours. University of Seoul will subsidize the cost of some of the field trips during the program. On-campus housing will be offered on a first come first serve basis, and students will be responsible for housing fees.

Scholarships for Canadian academics, students and professionals: Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program, 2023-2024

Global Affairs Canada and the Chinese Ministry of Education are offering short-term scholarships to Canadians wishing to study abroad in China. Scholarships are awarded for studies, research, language studies or a combination of studies and language studies at participating Chinese institutions.

  • Funding organizations: Global Affairs Canada and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China

Global Faculty Week 2023 at Tec de Monterrey in Mexico (in-person)

Tecnológico de Monterrey is the top private university in Mexico. Its Global Faculty Week 2023 (from March 6th to 10th, 2023) will allow faculty to share their expertise and teach in a multicultural environment. This is an in-person event, and you must choose at least two international campuses of Tecnológico de Monterrey when applying.

Interested faculty should note that March 6-10 is within our regular Saint Mary’s University teaching term, and therefore faculty would need to have the ability to be away from campus during this period.


Call for Globalink Mentors

Mitacs is hiring a Globalink mentor to help welcome Mitacs Globalink Program interns (from countries such as Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Taiwan, Tunisia, Ukraine, the UK and the US) who will complete a 12-week research internship at a Canadian university in Summer 2023.

Kansai Gaidai University Asian Studies Program Japanese Language Courses

Kansai Gaidai University is offering an online program in which SMU students can take up to two courses in winter 2023 (Jan 25-May 26 2023). Tuition is paid at the host university. Students may receive academic credits towards their SMU degree, provided that those transfer credits can be approved beforehand via the Letter of Permission Request Form submitted to the SMU Records Office.
