HERSTART FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR WINTER & SUMMER 2024 ARE OPEN! 🌎  

Youth Challenge International (YCI) has launched new positions and start dates for Canadians (citizens and permanent residents) to gain professional experience in the international development and social entrepreneurship sectors in a  HerStart Fellowship. YCI is currently recruiting for HerStart International Fellowship positions to collaborate for 3 or 6 months with our impact-driven teams in Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda!  

HerStart is a YCI program providing 10,000 women in Tanzania, Uganda and Ghana with the training, tools, and funding opportunities to become social entrepreneurs.  As a key part of HerStart, Fellows have the opportunity to support YCI staff, as well as our innovative and impact-driven partner organizations in each country.  

3- and 6-month placements with start dates in January and May 2024 are now open. Positions available include:

The UArctic Entrepreneurship Fund

Applications for The Uarctic Entrepreneurship Fund are accepted until October 27 2023.

To truly solve the challenges facing the Arctic, and thus the world, UArctic is committed to supporting the development of northern entrepreneurs and providing resources to help advance local ideas. The UArctic Entrepreneurship Fund (click here) is a new initiative that complements existing, mature prize funds with a seed-fund program, encouraging innovation and solutions on a local level.

The fund is open to any individual with an incubator-stage product or service that directly benefits the Arctic environment or Arctic communities and has a positive, demonstrable impact on the Arctic. We especially encourage applications from Arctic Indigenous and/or northern-based entrepreneurs. Expected grant disbursement amounts are in the range of $2,000 to $5,000 USD, though exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

The pilot call for The UArctic Entrepreneurship Fund is open until October 27, 2023.

Study abroad for a semester in the United States! Killam Fellowships Program 2024-25

The Killam Fellowships program is an exceptional opportunity for full-time Canadian undergraduate students to pursue an exchange program at American universities. Applicants chosen through a competitive selection process are awarded a US$6000 scholarship (approx. CAD$8100) for their exchange study in the US. Interested students should submit their SMU Exchange application package (see information here) to the Global Learning and Intercultural Support Office by December 15 2023.

Credits

Academic credits may be earned to the extent that they are applicable to your SMU degree. Book an advising appointment with your academic advisor to review which of the remaining program requirements may be completed on a transfer-credit basis and how the Letter of Permission Request Form works for the transfer of credits. You will pay SMU tuition at SMU for the transfer credit hours.

Announcement from Rikkyo University

Saint Mary’s partner institution in Japan, Rikkyo University, will offer an in-person Japanese language program.

Dates: Jan 9-Jan 26, 2024 

The program consists of 46.7 hours of classroom instruction on Japanese language plus 25 hours of lectures on Japanese culture and society, including field trips. See the attached flyer.

Costs:

306,000yen (approx. CAD$2900) payable to the host institution to cover tuition and administrative fee. The program cost does not include transportation costs (to and within Japan), or any other miscellaneous living expenses for the duration of the program.

Academic credits:

Contact the academic advising office of your program to find out if you can receive transfer credit hours towards your SMU degree.

Government of Japan MEXT Scholarship Program

Every year, the Government of Japan, via the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), offers scholarships to foreign students who are interested in studying at a Japanese university. 

The Undergraduate Students Scholarship is intended for students born on or after April 2, 1999, and who’ve already completed or will have completed at least 12 years of education or a program the equivalent of Japanese Senior High School by March 2024. Please note that the deadline for submitting applications is Friday, May 26, 2023.

The Research Students Scholarship is intended for students who were born on or after April 2, 1989, and hold a bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent, in any subject. Please note that the deadline for submitting applications is Monday, May 15, 2023.

Tokyo Metropolitan University is offering “TMU Summer Program on Japanese & Japan Studies in 2023” from July 4 to July 18, 2023.

The 2-week program consists of 42 hours of Japanese language study, and 13.5 hours of Japan Studies.  

Students will be evaluated according to class participation, oral presentation and quizzes.

〇 Japanese Language Placement Test  

Students will be allocated to classes based on their Japanese language level according “SPOT90” test. 

Before applying the program, students will have to take “SPOT90” test with free of charge.

Stories of Change - Global Citizenship Education Webinar

To address current global challenges, the linkages between the global and the local are fundamentally important. Global citizenship education plays a critical role in this regard. It helps build skills and knowledge that are required to understand and play an active role in addressing complex global challenges in ways that inform change without (re)producing harmful practices. This webinar highlights provincial and regional councils’ work on global citizenship. Leaders in global citizenship education will share their projects and some of the promising practises they have integrated in their approaches to global citizenship. The webinar builds on ICN’s ongoing work on global citizenship.

Announcement from ACIC: ICN Public Engagement Training

Explore decolonial, anti-racist and feminist approaches to public engagement in this training offered in partnership with the Inter-Council Network (ICN). This training is based on findings and recommendations from ICN’s recent research project. The research provided space for introspection and aimed to:

• highlight decolonial, anti-racist and feminist practices in public engagement from different locations with different actors;

• curate tools and practices that can inform more ethical practices in our decolonial, anti-racist and feminist work;

• and shape narratives and priorities in policy and practice spaces within the sector, hopefully contributing to transformative change..

Participants can expect to build a shared understanding on what anti-racism, feminism and decolonization looks like in practice; to gain an understanding of how to assess core power dynamics at the heart of public engagement activities; and to gain skills on how to adapt based on their audience and build in mechanisms to ensure equitable public engagement.

The training is broken down into two parts: one in-person workshop and a half day virtual session. All attendees are required to attend both the sessions, please note that even though this Eventbrite ticket is only for April 11, it will be assumed that you are attending both parts, and will be sent the Zoom details to login for the virtual training session as well. Organizations, networks and institutions working in the international cooperation sector in Atlantic Canada are invited to register.

The training will be facilitated by Ashley Copage. Ashley Copage (she/her) is a mother, educator, and student from Sipekne’katik First Nation in Nova Scotia. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Human Nutrition from MSVU and a Graduate Diploma in Curriculum Development from CBU, she is in her final year of a Master of Education in Creativity, Sustainability, and Innovation at CBU. Most recently, Ashley has worked for the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq, Clean Foundation, and the NS Department of Education.
